Doorbell dogs like Rita are found in the villages of Bulgaria and in many other parts
of the world.
They survive in a chronic state of deprivation with no companionship or shelter from the weather and only scraps of food – typically leftover bread or rice.
People use them as living doorbells th at alert them by barking
at an approaching visitor.
